for everyone
First posted 02 October 2005 here.

I am a mere spectator
To the beauty you are growing into.
All I can do is sit on my chair
As I watch you sing your melody.
I am moved by your song --
Its words, its hymn, its everything.
I watch you as you let the music escape from your lips
And reach into my soul
Like you have a thousand times before.

I am a mere spectator
To the minstrel you are becoming.
All I can do is applaud with the others
As I sit on my chair,
Silently wishing we can sing a duet.

Inspired by Café Loyola & Norah Jones's "Those Sweet Words".

Before the night is done, I just have to hear those sweet words spoken like a melody.

XX Tonight I Can Write...
Translated by W.S. Merwin

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Write, for example, 'The night is shattered
and the blue stars shiver in the distance.'

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms.
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me, sometimes I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.
And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is shattered and she is not with me.

This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.
My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight searches for her as though to go to her.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another's. She will be another's. Like my kisses before.
Her voice. Her bright body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms
my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.

Translations of Pablo Neruda's 'XX Puedo Escribir Los Versos...'

WASHINGTON—US food group Heinz said Tuesday that it had decided to stop buying Chinese milk for use in its products there in the wake of a giant tainted milk scandal that has left 53,000 children ill.

“In order to reassure consumers about the safety of Heinz products, Heinz has made the strategic decision to switch our milk supply in China and Hong Kong to non-Chinese sources, and we are testing all dairy ingredients for melamine prior to use in our factories,” a spokesman for the company said.

China has launched a probe following the discovery of melamine added to milk apparently to make watered-down milk appear richer in protein.

Four babies have died in mainland China after drinking milk containing melamine, while another 53,000 have been sickened, many with kidney stones and related problems.

The state-run China News Agency said that 27 people had been arrested.

Anglo-Dutch food group Unilever also announced Tuesday it was recalling brands of Lipton milk tea powder in Hong Kong and Macau after testing showed them tainted with melamine, which is normally used to make plastics.

In Manila, Unilever Philippines said all its products containing milk had only milk ingredients coming from Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United States.

The recall of four batches of Lipton’s 3-in-1 milk tea powder in Hong Kong and Macau came after the company’s internal quality check found melamine in the products, Unilever Hong Kong said.

Hong Kong authorities said they found melamine in Pocky Men’s coffee cream-coated biscuit stick by Japan’s Ezaki Glico Co.

South Korea’s Food and Drug Administration said melamine had been found in Nabisco Ritz cracker cheese sandwiches and in rice crackers made by Danyang Day Bright Co.

Meanwhile, a day after British candy maker Cadbury recalled 11 items sold in parts of Asia and the Pacific, Hong Kong investigators said the amount of melamine found was legally acceptable. The Food and Drug Administration said that no level of melamine added to food was legal in the United States. AP

Taken from: http://www.smithmag.net/sixwords/

Legend has it that Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words.
His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

Last year, SMITH Magazine re-ignited the
recountre by asking their readers for their own six-word memoirs. They sent in short life stories in droves,

from the bittersweet (“Cursed with cancer, blessed with friends”)

and poignant (“I still make coffee for two”)

to the inspirational (“Business school? Bah! Pop music? Hurrah”)

and hilarious (“I like big butts, can’t lie”).

So, what's your story?
